CHILDREN’S KENPO KARATE – A Journey Like No Other

In the years ahead, your child will need every advantage to succeed; advantages

ordinary school programs or daycares cannot always provide. Newark Kenpo Karate’s Children’s Karate Programs not only develop character and self-confidence, but also provide skills necessary for a lifetime of learning. Our research-based curriculum has been created to ensure the achievement of key developmental milestones in the areas of language, social interaction and motor skills.

Develop Skills

School teachers and parents alike know that children who develop skills including listening, following directions and paying attention, and who have confidence and a good attention span at an early age will perform better in both pre-school and elementary school environments.  Additionally, children with above average motor skills and coordination are likely to excel in physical and social activities.

Tiger Cubs

This group is divided into three levels; Tiger Cubs, Little Tigers and Little Dragons. In these classes, our goal is to entertain, stimulate and educate children all within the

framework of a structured play group. We strive to build coordination and basic motor skills and teach courtesy, fair play and a sense of accomplishment. We emphasize the

FUN aspects of Karate, stretching and movement.

Each class is 45 minutes in length and is structured to teach physical, mental and social skills. We strive to build coordination, concentration and confidence in each student

through disciplined classroom activities and individualized goal setting. Class size is limited to enable each child to reach their full potential.

The Tiger Cub’s Class is an introductory class meeting once per week. It is designed to help develop the young child’s individual physical awareness and basic coordination

skills. Both individual and group activities are used in conjunction with various mats, pads, hand targets, fitness balls, medicine balls and kicking shields. This program has

been created to broaden a young child’s motor skills and physical experiences and prepare them for the next level, Little Tigers.

Little Tigers

Little Dragons

Little Dragons

The Little Tiger’s Class is a continuation of the Tiger Cubs curriculum. Distinguished by Yellow and Black belts, this class reinforces the skills learned in the previous level and

includes many more individual and group activities. Instructor’s stress increasing each student’s fitness level with progressively challenging drills, teaching the concepts of left

and right, and focusing on developing the value of teamwork, cooperation, good manners, and respect for oneself and others. This level adds progressively more difficult

coordination of hands and feet, balance, timing and flexibility and an introduction to Self Defense techniques and "Karate Tag."

The Little Dragon’s Class is designed for ages 5 - 7 who have successfully completed the Little Tiger’s Program. Wearing Yellow and Red belts, Little Dragons focus on fine

motor coordination, balance, strength, visualization and agility. Through disciplined classroom activities, students expand their knowledge of Self Defense techniques, add

Kenpo terminology and learn to set goals and achieve them. At this level, we recommend 2 classes per week and students are integrated into the Junior classes. Class times are more flexible and Family and Special Discounts may apply.

Junior Program

The Program

The Program

All children need to develop a sense of confidence and security within them. Parents are not always available to assist them in their efforts. Kenpo Karate provides a system of defense which serves as a basis for the development of confidence, self-esteem, respect for discipline, responsibility and achievement. Children develop their inner strengths, learning to rely on their personal integrity, convictions and abilities. Parents see almost immediate results. Notable improvements occur in school grades, attention span, concentration and leadership abilities after as little as a few months of study.

The Junior Program has been specifically designed to meet the needs and interests of students ages 7-12. Reflecting their increasing maturity and ability to learn faster,

students are grouped by ability level through a belt ranking system which allows

students to periodically be evaluated and regularly advanced through progressively

more sophisticated skills and techniques. The Belt Ranking System for our Juniors

reflects their advancement through Beginner (White, Yellow and Orange),

Forms and Sets

Each of the Children’s Classes is 45 minutes long and includes several of the following main components. Cardiovascular and stretching exercises are utilized as warm-ups that challenge and encourage each student to improve their fitness levels. Basics including kicks, blocks and strikes are practiced in the air or with different types of equipment as instructors move from student to student giving patient and helpful pointers and encouragement. Occasionally contests or rotating stations utilizing different pieces of equipment like heavy bags, hand targets or kicking shields are incorporated for variety and excitement.

Forms and Sets

Forms and sets are solo routines practiced to develop the sequential flow of multiple

movements and to develop concentration, focus and expression. Two person interactive drills develop timing, flow and reactions. Self Defense techniques are performed on the instructors to teach practical application and varied responses to street situations. Vocabulary words are used to illustrate concepts and principles utilized in Kenpo  Karate and to promote a deeper understanding of the detail and finer points of the art of Kenpo.
